Infusion Insight: The AAMI Foundation’s National Coalition for Infusion Therapy Safety
The AAMI Foundation has taken the lead in spearheading a number of patient safety initiatives within the healthcare industry, with a vision for “safe adoption and safe use of healthcare technology.”
These initiatives started in early 2010 with concerns that the existing standard on infusion pumps was not adequately addressing the problems of these widely-used devices. At the same time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was preparing for a major initiative to improve infusion pump safety, based on data showing at least 56,000 reported adverse incidents and 87 pump recalls over a five-year period. AAMI and FDA partnered to host a landmark summit on the issue in October 2010, and the AAMI Foundation subsequently formed the National Coalition for Infusion Therapy Safety.
The AAMI Foundation’s National Coalition for Infusion Therapy Safety includes clinicians, industry partners, researchers, and national patient safety organizations. This initiative addresses ongoing patient safety issues identified in 2010 at the AAMI/FDA Infusion Device Summit.
The Coalition has recently published a series of quick guides offering guidance and recommendations to clinicians and hospital administration on important topics to improve infusion therapy safety:
